Whatever Did We Do Before the Smartphone

What did we do before the smartphone?

Shopping, walking, eating, driving—so alone.

How did we manage with thoughts only our own?

All those hours we spent—away from a phone.

Now we stop those things that intrude;

Flowers bright and pretty, birds trilling or tempting food.

Friends or family here before us, with texts and tweets we exclude;

We talk of elsewhere and elsewhen, but the here and now we elude.

Revised and reprinted from a poem by John Maberry,

which first appeared on Views from Eagle Peak in 2007.

Then the words were cell phone, of course, and not smartphone.
